Avril Lavigne has revealed her hit song Sk8er Boi is being made into a movie to celebrate its 20th anniversary.
The Canadian pop princess, 37, was just 15 years old when she signed with LA Reid – the same executive who signed Justin Bieber as a young teenager – and within months she had skyrocketed to major success.
The singer wrote her debut album, Let Go, at the age of 16, which as we all know includes the iconic Sk8er Boi, a pop-punk anthem essentially encouraging people not to abide by society’s expectations.
Now, 20 years later, the story of Sk8er Boi is being transformed into a movie.
Avril announced the news on the She Is The Voice podcast on iHeart Radio, revealing: ‘A lot of people have been asking me to play this song on TV shows, it keeps getting brought back up.
‘And I’m actually going to turn this song into a film! And just take it to the next level.’
Admitting Sk8er Boi is still one of her ‘favourite songs to play live’, Avril explained her inspiration behind the anthem.
‘In high school you have all these groups and cliques… it’s a missed opportunity at love,’ she said.
‘The skater boy is in love with the preppy girl and she’s too cool for him… down the road she wishes she had followed her heart and not society’s expectations.’

It’s not the first time Sk8er Boi was tipped to become a feature film: all the way back in 2003, Billboard reported that Paramount Pictures had hired ER writer David Zabel to adapt the song’s story into a movie.
As we’re all painfully aware, that never saw the light of day, but it looks like good things come to those who wait.

After her incredible debut, Avril boasted a number one record with her second release, Under My Skin, and went on to release four more albums, with her newest set for release in February 2022.
The singer is going back to her roots on her newest tracks, with lead single Bite Me featuring Blink-182 rocker Travis Barker.
Avril is also preparing for a new world tour which will kick off in February 2022.
