Eminem has revealed that going through drug addiction meant he had to learn how to rap again after losing his skills.
The Lose Yourself rapper was at the height of his drug addiction around 2007 but fought the disease and released his comeback album Relapse in 2009.
During that time, he recorded the song which featured the controversial line about Chris Brown assaulting Rihanna.
The deleted-song was leaked last year but what fans didn’t realise is that Eminem faced a big hurdle while recording the song, losing his legendary rapping skills.
Speaking on Sirius XM’s Shade 48, Eminem explained of the song leak: ‘Like the rhyme schemes didn’t even sound familiar to me. So I was caught off-guard too.
‘I was like, “What the f**k, I said that?” I said it and I was wrong for saying that [line about Rihanna]. It was f*****g stupid.’
The 46-year-old continued: ‘You know, a lot of times, especially with the Relapse record, when I first started learning how to rap again, because of the drug situation that I went through and having to relearn a lot of things, that was one of those things that it was like: “Well, if it rhyme, say it”.
Eminem takes full accountability for rapping about Chris’ brutal assault on Rihanna and stated: ‘That’s not an excuse, but I’m just saying that there was a phase I was going through with that Relapse record. It was one of those things, I think I just said it ‘cause it rhymed.
‘Looking back now, I should have thought better of it.’
The Grammy-winning rapper apologised for the lyric last month on the track Zeus, which features on his surprise new album Music To Be Murdered By: Side B.
He raps: ‘And wholeheartedly, apologies, Rihanna/For that song that leaked, I’m sorry, Ri/It wasn’t meant to cause you grief/Regardless, it was wrong of me.’
The original line on the leaked song goes: ‘Of course I side with Chris Brown, I’d beat a b***h down too.’
It was particularly controversial as Eminem has a close friendship with Rihanna, enjoying chart-topping success with the songs Love The Way You Lie and Monster. They even embarked on a joint tour together in 2014.
