Ben Miller makes shock return to Death in Paradise (Picture: BBC)
It was recently revealed that Ben Miller is set to make a shock return to Death in Paradise, and he’s admitted that he never imagined he’d be back on the show.
His character DI Richard Poole was initially killed off on the third series of the drama six years ago, but he’s due to make an appearance in the upcoming 10th series.
DI Richard appeared to have been murdered with an ice pick by an old university friend on the show and now Ben has spoken about his return – responding to speculation about how his character survived.
The actor appeared on Good Morning Britain to talk about heading back to the island of Saint Marie, saying that he thought his character was ‘gone for good’.
He told presenters Alex Beresford and Charlotte Hawkins: ‘We’re very lucky to have a great number of old fans of Death in Paradise and there’s been a lot of speculation.’
He also said that he’d heard plenty of theories about Richard was going to come back, saying: ‘The one I liked was that I’m coming back as a zombie!’

He added: ‘I thought he was gone for good, he was murdered in the show in season three, and he was stabbed in the heart with an ice-pick. No one was more surprised than me when a script-writer [told me]. It’s very cleverly done, I have to say, it’s beautifully done.’
The news of the actor’s return came as a surprise to many fans, especially after Ben spoke to Metro.co.uk last year explaining the reason behind his exit.
At the time, Ben said: ‘The Death In Paradise cast turnover is so high. ‘It has been amazing for me personally, but when it came out it got battered, it had the worst reviews of anything that I have ever been in.

‘I wasn’t sad to leave, it was a great ride and I felt like it was a good time to leave. I was proud to have launched it and it’s amazing because it’s now all over the world. ‘It is a comedy on some levels and that’s the reason it got such bad reviews from critics.’
The new series of the show will arrive on BBC One on January 7, 2021.
Meanwhile, Ben also spoke about his new show Bridgerton on Good Morning Britain, warning viewers about the ‘saucy’ sex scenes in the anticipated period drama and joking that author Jane Austen ‘wouldn’t approve’.
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
Death in Paradise is available on BBC iPlayer.
