Part of the attraction for the pair to adopt these hobbies was to wind Jeremy up.
Richard said: “It was a major factor in it. Taking up something that annoys Jeremy – that’s another reason for doing it.
“I wouldn’t say that’s the only reason because I wouldn’t devote that much of my time to annoying him.
“But it’s in much the same way that James hates The Archers on Radio 4 – hates it.
“So on the way to meet up sometimes I used to listen to it in my car. Because I could then tell James I’d listened to The Archers and I thought it annoyed him
“Just before lockdown I thought I’d give this a shot and it was actually my daughter’s boyfriend who introduced me to golf and I thought, ‘This is rather good fun’.
“It’s bloody hard and I’d had a few lessons, kept it secret from the chaps then decided to share it. Regretted it.
“They gave me a lot of grief and then lockdown really intensified and I couldn’t do any more so at some point this year I’m going to go back to the golf course and have another go.”
James is even learning German and chooses to eat certain foods in the hope that he will really irk Jeremy.
In an ironic manner, he told The Sun how he arrived at the venue in Central London where our interview took place, saying: “I came on the bicycle because obviously I’m very woke.
“I’m trying to learn German – I don’t know if that would p**s him off.
“Apparently Jeremy complained or had an opinion on the lunch menu that we have here so I’ve chosen the raw tuna and the ethical lobster for lunch other than the cheeseburger or the steak which is what I imagine he had.”
