Acclaimed filmmaker M Night Shyamalan has revealed the ultimate plot twist – that he and Matthew Perry actually did hang out, despite the actor’s famous anecdote stating otherwise.
In 2016, Perry appeared on The Graham Norton Show where he told a story about an amazing evening he initially thought he had spent with The Sixth Sense director Shyamalan.
The Friends star explained that he believed he had been having an incredible time getting to know the filmmaker, only to discover that he had actually been hanging out with another Indian man who simply looked like him.
But five years later, it turns out Perry’s case of mistaken identity was two-fold – as he had been with Shyamalan when the night began.
On the latest episode of The Graham Norton Show, Shyamalan broke down exactly what happened to Graham Norton via video chat.
The Split writer explained: ‘I’ve pieced it together and I have an amateur sleuth answer for what happened.
‘So we were hanging out and we were having fun, and Matthew’s like, “Let’s go to another place.” And I’m like, “I’m a little tired, I’m going to leave here and you can go to the other place.”
‘Meanwhile, there’s this kind of fan that’s been hanging about and he’s also Indian. And he’s a big fan, he’s come over a couple of times, wants to hang out with us.’
From that point, Shyamalan believes Perry ‘went on to continue partying and this other Indian dude joined him’.
Then later on, when the 17 Again actor’s friend told him that the person he was at the club with was not who he thought it was, Shyamalan thinks Perry ‘second-guessed himself that we actually had this evening together’.
‘All these years later I have to see him because we did hang out, we had a great time and he was very funny,’ Shyamalan concluded.
That plot twist was definitely worth the wait!
Several YouTube users commented on the clip from The Graham Norton Show remarking that the tale is worthy of one of Shyamalan’s mind-boggling films.
‘This had to be directed by M Night he loves his twist,’ one person remarked.
‘I hope Matthew sees this it’s like a nice ending to a comedy,’ another said.
Perhaps Shyamalan’s version of events will jog Perry’s memory?
The Graham Norton Show returns next Friday at 10.35pm on BBC One.
