The Voice UK: Singer pays tribute to late father with emotional audition

A singer on The Voice UK paid a tribute to his late father who died when he was just 16 years old.

Benjamin Haycock from Exeter, Devon took to the stage tonight to sing an original song in memory of his dad.

Speaking in a VT ahead of his performance, Benjamin began: ‘For my blind audition I will be singing one of my own songs called Restlessness. It’s a very personal one to me.

‘The song is really an open letter to my dad. I was 16 when my dad died.

‘He had a wonderful heart and he was always the happiest man in the room and to lose him at such a young age was a big thing,’ he added.

‘The song is from me telling him what I have been through but where I am now, married, living in Devon and it’s almost like coming out of the other side.’

After a very emotional performance, all four judges turned their chairs for Benjamin.

Clearly moved by the singer’s audition, Will.i.am told him: ‘You’re the real deal.’

‘When you’re singing it’s so clear that you have an amazing voice and an amazing tone,’ Anne-Marie continued.

‘When you started rapping I just loved your flow as I was just like “How can you sing that well and have good of a flow” You have both.’

Sir Tom Jones weighed in: ‘You have taken it to another level as far as I’m concerned.

‘The rhythm is fantastic, the timing and the singing is what I liked. It was tremendous.’

Will.i.am went on to tell Benjamin that he would never ‘tell a singer what to sing’.

He added: ‘I think an artist, for them to blossom needs to either make the mistakes that they’re going to make and then if you make a mistake then you feel like you should have done it this way, then great bro where can I be helpful?’

After each coach pitched themselves to Benjamin, in the end, he decided to be on Team Will.

The Voice continues on ITV on Saturdays at 8.30pm.
