The roof came off Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas when the sure fire future Hall of Famer took a break from his blossoming Hollywood career to step back into the world of wrestling.
Soaking in the roar of the crowd, Cena stepped up to Roman Reigns moments after the Universal Champion retained his title over Edge in the main event of a stacked show.
There’s plenty of speculation that the former world champion will challenge the Tribal Chief for the gold at SummerSlam in Las Vegas – but fans won’t have to wait until SmackDown on Friday as he’ll be on the red brand tonight.
WWE has confirmed he will kick off the show – the brand’s first with a full crowd since March 2020 – and address the reason for this return.
The company teased: ‘The 16-time World Champion’s jaw-dropping reemergence at WWE Money in the Bank sent shockwaves through the WWE Universe, and Cena will kick off Monday Night Raw to explain why he chose now to return.
‘The WWE Universe erupted at the sight of Cena, who stole the moment from victorious Universal Champion Roman Reigns. What will The Leader of the Cenation have in store when he heads to the red brand?’
Fightful Select reports that Cena will be a ‘free agent’ for the time being, allowing him to appear on all shows.
Addressing fans after Money In The Bank went off the air, the champ promised he wasn’t back for ‘one night only’.
He said: ‘It’s so weird because I’m used to you guys telling me how much I suck. Man, this feels pretty good. Look at this dude’s sign of here, it says, “If Cena shows up, we cheer!” is this bizarro world? What’s going on?
‘Tonight, I just wanted to come out here, and let Roman Reigns know that I was back, and I certainly wanted to come out here and let all the people know that I’m back.
‘Now, I promise you this is not one night only, but what’s special to me is that this is the first night.
‘I’ve missed you guys. I’ve really, really missed you guys. I love you guys. Thank you so much for being here.’
