High on style and comfort (Pictures: Kitri/Asos/Arket/H&M)
Take one look at any online retailer right now and you will see first-hand how our shopping habits have changed.
Gone are the endless rows of tight dresses and high heels, and in their place are tracksuit co-ords, activewear and heavy knits.
Our waistbands are softer and our silhouettes looser. Nowadays, the feel of the fabric is often more important than the look. And our uniform of choice is exclusively an oversized hoodie, leggings and fluffy slippers.
While there is nothing wrong with this, a part of us will always yearn to dress up and put our best foot forward. In days such as these, that’s hard to do, but fashion has the power to lift a mood and brighten the spirit.
Thankfully, there are ways to dress stylishly without bypassing the cosiness we have come to love.
It may take longer to search out the gems, but there are pieces out there that are high on the fashion and comfort barometer.
When buying, stick to soft knits and cotton fabrics. Oversized styles are always tempting and deserve a place in our wardrobes, but slowly moving back to cinched waists and defined shapes could make you feel more confident and chic, even though the most movement you do in the day is from the desk to the kitchen.
The best thing about items like these is how easy they will fit into the wardrobe of our future. When normality resumes, the last thing we will want is our trusty leggings.
We will be reaching for something more exciting (but still comfy) to guide us slowly back.
And here are nine pieces that will do just that:
ASOS Design boxy cardi and midi skirt co-ord
Co-ord heaven (Picture: Asos)
Loungewear co-ords were top of our shopping lists last year, but for 2021 we want an upgrade. This cardigan and midi set will be soft enough for wearing around the house but will make it feel like you made an effort.
Arket quilted long jacket
Staple piece (Picture: Arket)
British weather means a jacket is a wardrobe staple all year round, and this beige option from Arket is a solid basis for any outfit. Utterly practical, the straight silhouette and quilted fabric give it extra style points.
New Look Curve wide rib trousers
Easy to wear (Picture: Asos)
Leggings are well and good, but to ease yourself back into the world of trousers, this rib effect pair are an excellent starting point. Easy to wear and versatile, pair with sleek trainers and a streamlined bodysuit.
Kitri Lorna pink striped alpaca sweater
Chic alternative (Picture: Kitri)
When we do make our move into the world, it will be difficult to part with the sweatshirts that have kept us warm all along. However, you may not have to say a permanent goodbye.
This pink striped alpaca sweater is a wonderfully chic alternative. Wear over jeans when you are brave enough for buttons or with a mini skirt, tights and chunky boots.
Converse Chuck Taylor All Star Lift trainers with embroidery
Style and comfort (Picture: Asos)
Rejoice because we are never saying goodbye to trainers. Perfect with just about every outfit, they are a never-fail comfort solution.
Go high with this very special pair of platform Converse complete with floral embroidery. A perfect example of comfort and style meshing together.
H&M tailored trousers
Looser fit (Picture: H&M)
The word ‘tailored’ may send shivers down your spine but it doesn’t have to mean tight and rigid. Although this pair begins with a cinched waist, the shape billows out below the waist and down the leg for a looser fit.
Violetta by Mango flared midi dress
Thrown on and go (Picture: Mango)
A midi dress is always a go-to for easy style. Dresses may feel like a left-field choice but what’s more convenient than an item you can throw on and go? Stick to block colours to keep the look within casual lines.
Arket puff sleeve jumper
Elegant number (Picture: Arket)
The key with comfortable yet stylish dressing is looking for special design elements. This Arket jumper with boat neckline and dropped shoulders is an elegant number and will look just as good with a pair of black leggings as it would tucked into a satin midi skirt.
Cos asymmetric A-line skirt
Classic (Picture: Cos)
A black midi skirt is a fashion classic and this asymmetric beauty from Cos is an excellent long-term investment. Made from organic cotton, it’s comfortable and durable.
Pair with knee high boots and a knit now or with trainers and a lightweight t-shirt when warmer days come.
