A crisp, fresh salad is the perfect weekday lunch – but there’s nothing worse than soggy leaves.
Wet, slimy lettuce that’s lost all its crunch can quickly make you lose your appetite. And a disappointing lunch can ruin your whole day.
Thankfully, a nutritionist has shared her ‘game changer’ hack that will ensure you’ll never have to eat a soggy salad – even if you leave it overnight.
Amanda Meixner’s trick involves filling a mason jar with your salad – with the dressing at the bottom and lettuce at the top.
The 28-year-old from Ohio says doing it this way should guarantee that your food will stay fresh overnight, and pour perfectly onto a plate in the way that you want to eat it.
Crisp leaves on the bottom – fresh dressing drizzled over the top. Perfect.
‘This is really the key to prepping a salad in advance but not having any of the ingredients get too soggy or wilted by the end,’ explained Amanda in her Instagram video.
‘I love adding in a can of veggies, add some protein and some fun stuff – I’ve done bacon here – and then top it with lettuce.’
Amanda’s salad looks delicious. Ranch dressing, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, red onion, eggs, bacon and lettuce.
Putting the lettuce in last – far from the dressing at the bottom of the jar – means it will stay crunchy overnight.
‘Then, when you’re ready to eat it, just shake up the jar, pour it on a plate and it comes out delicious.’
The Insta video has racked up more than 35,000 likes so far – and plenty of people have said they are going to give this trick a try.
‘This is the best meal prep hack I’ve ever seen!!! Genius!!!’ wrote one enthusiastic user.
‘My mind was blown, such a great idea,’ added another.
