Waste not want not (Picture: Branston)
When you think about it, traditional Christmas crackers are fairly wasteful and harmful to the environment.
Contents tossed aside for scrap a moment after opening, along with difficult to recycle components. Is the brief enjoyment they bring worth the damage?
Branston Pickle now have a more sustainable and tastier answer.
This year, they’re trialling the ‘world’s first’ edible Christmas cracker – made of actual cracker (as in cheese and crackers).
Reinterpreting the word ‘cracker’, the new product is filled with cheese and pickle chutney for something to snack on while waiting for the main event: the turkey.
The brand say it’s a ‘more sustainable choice over traditional toy-filled crackers’, which are often packed with single-use plastic, microplastic glitter and excessive packaging.
Their alternative creates ‘zero food waste’ while the outer packaging has been designed to keep plastic waste minimal.

Once cracked open, you’ll find Cathedral City Cheddar and Branston Pickle to enjoy it with.
It’s like a mini cheeseboard, suitable to split between the two pulling on the cracker – there’s no losers here.
Seeing as they’re still in the trial stage, they’re yet to send this product to mass market.
However, fans who want to try it out can get their hands on a small batch for free.
All you have to do is submit a joke to the brand, and the best ones will win a cracker.
Hari Gough of Branston says: ‘Our very special Christmas Cracker is something we’ve been working on behind the scenes for a while now.
‘[We want] to give cheese and pickle lovers everywhere a festive treat that not only tastes great but does good for the environment too when compared to traditional Christmas cracker options.’
