WHEN we’re weighing up whether to have our third takeaway of the week or actually do some cooking, it’s normally the meal prep that puts us off.
After all, it’s undeniably boring, time-consuming and messes up the kitchen before we’ve even turned the oven on… or maybe that’s just us?

Either way, savvy amateur chefs on TikTok have been sharing the faff-free tricks that considerably cut back on meal prep time.
From the “right way” to chop an onion to an instant method of removing tendons, these top tips are bound to become part of your everyday routine.
Remove tendons in seconds
Look, no one likes removing the tendons from a piece of raw chicken – but if you don’t bother doing it, you can end up with grim stringy bits in your meal. *Shivers*

Well luckily for us, TikTok user Rae has shared the instant way she gets rid of them using just a fork.
Last month, she took part in the challenge where people are sharing the things they “randomly saw one day that is now an unconscious standard practise in your life”.
Showing off her life hack, Rae placed a fork over the tendon at the end of the chicken and held onto it with a piece of kitchen roll.

She then forced the fork down which removed the tendon more effectively then we’ve ever done with a knife.
The clip has racked up over 859,000 “likes” and left fans stunned.
One replied: “Girl, when I tell you my jaw dropped.”
Another added: “I learn more on TikTok than I do in school!!”

It’s no secret that we’re big fans of garlic and will often double the serving suggestion in recipes.
But what we’re not so keen on is peeling the cloves which leave your fingers sticky and smelling like garlic for days.
Finding a way around this, TikTok user Olivares Barce simply turns the entire garlic bulb on its side and chopping into it with a meat cleaver.
After flipping it over, he then gave it a tap with the knife and – just like that – the cloves fell right out. Genius.
‘Right way’ to chop onion

We can just about pass as a functioning adult in everyday life – but ask us to chop up an onion and we’ll make a total meal of it. No pun intended.
Fortunately, one amateur chef has revealed how he cuts them into quarters to make the process a whole lot easier.
He then turns each quarter on its side, cuts down and then flips it before chopping it lengthways.
“It’s very easy,” he said. “And it creates a perfect dice!”

As lovely as mash is, there’s no denying that it’s a long-winded process which involves peeling, boiling and (you’ve guessed it) lots of mashing.
Well if you want a quick alternative, TikTokers have been simply shoving unboiled potatoes in the microwave – and it works surprisingly well.
After seeing the unusual method on the channel 5 Minute Crafts, Eitan Bernath popped some potatoes in a microwavable bag and left them in there for 15 minutes.
Although he was sceptical at first, he said: “Oh my god. This looks exactly like mash when you cook potatoes in boiling water.”

Having put the potatoes through a grater, he then finished off with cream, milk and seasoning before tucking into his super speedy mash.
If you’re cooking bacon for one, then Eric Kuiper’s cooking hack is a must.
Instead of laying each rasher out individually under the grill, this TikTok star intertwines four so they cook faster and don’t fall apart in a sandwich.

What’s more, this trick also makes it easier to chop up the bacon if you’re using it in a salad or pasta dish.
Using the hashtag #baconhack, Eric said this was the “best way” to prepare a BLT.
