It’s been a long 15 or so months since the UK first went into lockdown. And even longer since we last got the joy of winning at McDonald’s Monopoly.
The fast food chain’s normally-annual competition has been on a hiatus for two-and-a-half years after its usual start time in March 2020 was scuppered, as was this year’s.
However, we can now confirm that it’s back for 2021, and will begin on August 25.
As with before, items will bear peel-off stickers that offer ‘instant win’ prizes you can redeem in store. The game pieces’ codes can also be entered online and collected to win larger prizes.
The competition is on for six weeks, and customers will have the chance to become a ‘McDonald’s VIP’ with game pieces appearing on selected menu items.
As well as the standard prizes like games consoles and shopping vouchers, 1,000 winners of Gold VIP Cards will receive the will also be able to claim a free medium meal every week from their local restaurant – for a whole 12 months.
The game pieces for March had already been printed and dated, so McDonald’s has repurposed this packaging with the outdated game pieces to ensure the promotion could return ASAP.
As the game pieces will include the incorrect expiry dates, McDonald’s is urging customers to check the dates on the McDonald’s website rather than assuming they’re invalid.
Apart from the Gold Cards, McDonald’s have remained tight-lipped about the other prizes available, but past winners have bagged £100,000 in cash, Mini Cooper cars, and mobile phones.
The game has been running since 2005, and fans are clearly glad to see it back.
When McDonald’s tweeted about their Monopoly return, one person commented underneath: ‘Get on! Been waiting for this! Best save all my money in preparation for a whole lot of McDonald’s’
Another wrote: ‘I shouldn’t be so excited.’
We’ve all had a tough old time of it, so getting excited about a free apple pie (or the prospect of some cash) is nothing to be ashamed of.
