THREE people were shot dead and another three injured after a gunman opened fire at a bowling alley in Illinois on Saturday night.
Rockford police said in a statement that there was an active shooter investigation near Don Carter Lanes around 7.15pm yesterday evening, and advised people to avoid the area.

What happened in the Illinois bowling alley shooting?
At 7:15pm on Saturday, December 27 Rockford police warned there was an active shooter near Don Carter Lanes.
It later emerged a gunman had opened fire at a bowling alley in the Illinois area.
Chief Dan O’Shea confirmed three had died in the attack, WBBM-TV reported.
Another three people were injured by gunshots and are being treated at nearby hospitals.
Chief O’Shea later said: “When officers arrived on scene, the shooter was still in the building, no officers fired their weapons that we know of at this point, but the individual that we believe is responsible, and the only individual we believe at this point to be involved, we may have in custody.”
Shooting is believed to have occurred inside and outside of the bowling alley.
Rockford police believe the shooting to be a random attack and later tweeted that a 37-year-old white male suspect was in custody.
The bowling alley posted on its Facebook page the simple message: “Pray Please.”
And Rockford Mayor Tom McNamara posted on Facebook: “I’m angered and saddened by the violence tonight at Don Carter Lanes.
“My thoughts are with the families of those who lost loved ones.
“I’m also thinking of those who were injured and my hopes are with them for a quick and full recovery.”

How many people were killed?
Three people tragically died in last night’s attack with a further three injured and receiving treatment in hospital.
It is believed people were shot both inside and outside the bowling alley in the Saturday night attack.
Police have not revealed any information on the ages of the victims.
Two teenagers were among the victims, according to Associated Press, but it is not clear whether their injuries were fatal or not.
