A hotel in Cornwall was left fishing tens of thousands of pounds worth of furniture from its swimming pool yesterday morning.
Benches, chairs and other outdoor fixtures were found floating in the water at the Atlantic Reach resort in Newquay after mystery guests pushed the items while the area was unsupervised.
Apologising for the delay to hotel proceedings that day, staff of the hotel posted images of the destruction to social media.
‘Some helpful guests completely trashed our outdoor pool and a vast amount of furniture last night. Just what we need,’ they captioned the post on Facebook.
The picture shows loungers, parasols and tables sunken beneath the water, seemingly having spent the night soaking.
In a later post, staff clarified that the situation was more serious than having to pull a few pieces from the water – the items were new, expensive investments for the benefit of their guests:
‘This isn’t just a cheap bit of plastic in a pool. This is thousands of pounds of newly purchased, high quality, commercial-grade furniture to include solid wood as well as hygienic, cleanable plastic that we have invested in for all of our customers’ comfort.’
The spokesperson continued: ‘HOWEVER, the most worrying part of all of this was that there could be much worse in the pool that the eye couldn’t see such as glass or other sharp objects that our staff have had to investigate and the risk posed to all other customers was of serious concern.
‘The additional stress of today’s events is something that we could [have] done without during this pandemic.’

In response to the post, hundreds of people have sent their well-wishes and sympathies, with some questioning who would commit such an act.
Staff at Atlantic Reach have since thanked their followers for their support on. the post, which now has over 600 comments. As well as being ‘blown away’ by the encouraging words, a spokesperson has made their annoyance with the situation very clear:
‘No doubt the parents of these delinquents will be the type to complain or leave a bad review if there is insufficient or tatty furniture for them to sit on during their stay.’
‘Now we face a big clean up, a major safety issue while we assess the full extent of damage, a closed pool, less furniture for wonderful guests to sit on when the sun shines again, more cost that really is a huge kick in the teeth and a lot of additional stress for an already, very hard working team.
‘This antisocial behaviour is utterly disgusting.’
According to the team, the people responsible for the sinking of the furniture were found and later reported accordingly to the police.
