The pair from Northwich, Cheshire, faced a tough Yuletide after they both lost their jobs during the coronavirus pandemic.
They had been using foodbanks to feed their four children aged six to 15, but visited an Asda supermarket on Christmas Eve.
As they started their shop, an elderly woman said “Merry Christmas!” to Emily, 28, who turned around to see the OAP walking away.
When Emily looked in their trolley she saw a £100 Asda gift card inside – paid for and ready to use.
She said: “I turned to see where she had gone but she had vanished.
“Then I asked someone at the till how much was on it and they said £100. I was just gobsmacked.”
‘TURNED OUR 2020 AROUND’
The stunned couple finished their £112 shop with the gift card meaning they only had to pay £12.
It meant the family were able to have a proper Christmas celebration.
Emily had worked for a butchers in Northwich but lost her job during the first national lockdown in March.
Her work private cleaning in a care home has also suffered due to increased restrictions on staff.
Carl was also unemployed last year after losing his job at a concrete factory.
Emily said she was incredibly grateful to the woman and said she was determined to track her down to thank her.
She said: “To be honest it wasn’t going to be a good year because my partner just lost his job and I’m out of work.
“It has been a tough couple of months.
“We had to scrimp and save for the last bit of food shopping and we managed to get a couple more Christmas presents because of this.
“It was a massive help!
“I really want to thank her and make sure she realises just how much she helped us. It’s really turned around our 2020.”
