Six year-old Philip Morado suffered terrifying symptoms after being diagnosed with a Covid-related illness called Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome
A six year-old boy convulsed, screamed and pulled his own hair after falling ill with a potentially deadly Covid-linked illness. Philip Morado ‘couldn’t control his body’ after falling ill with Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome (MIS-C) shortly before Christmas last year.
His mother Shannon Morado, from Greeley in Colorado, said: ‘He was, like, shaking and screaming and pulling his hair, I’ve never seen anything like this. It was terrifying to see that he couldn’t control his body. Almost like he was getting a shock through his body. He could feel his heart going through his chest.’
Philip suffered the disturbing symptoms a month after he, his parents and his two siblings were diagnosed with Covid. But while his close relatives overcame the virus, Philip’s behavior became uncharacteristically erratic, and he suffered red, puffy eyes – as well as vomiting.
A local urgent care center advised the Morados to ‘just let the virus pass,’ and to give Philip over-the-counter painkillers, after suggesting the youngster was ‘just acting out.’
But the Morados took him to their local hospital, where doctors realized how sick the six year-old was, and helicoptered him for specialist treatment at Rocky Mountain Children’s Hospital in Denver.
Shannon told KDVR: ‘And they’re like, “So, we’re probably going to have to fly him to Denver”. And my heart just drops, like, “What is going on?!” We thought we were going to lose him.’
Philip was given specialist treatment, and gradually began to recover. He spent five days in hospital, and was discharged on Christmas Day.
Shannon said: ‘To bring him home on Christmas Day, there really are no words to describe it. Like I didn’t need anything.’
Experts initially believed Covid posed little danger to young children who were infected by it. Since then, a small but worrying number of youngsters have suffered MIS-C, which causes inflammation of the blood vessels, and can kill.
Shannon has urged other parents fearful for their kids’ health following a Covid infection to seek urgent medical treatment.
The US has now recorded 23.3million Covid cases, and seen close to 390,000 deaths.
