US District Judge Alison Nathan said that date may be further delayed depending on the outcome of Maxwell’s request to overturn her conviction.
Maxwell’s defense team has called for a new trial following reports that a juror may have withheld past sexual abuse before his selection to the jury. That juror told journalists following the trial of how he was a victim to childhood sexual abuse.
In a letter, her defense team requested the postponement, saying that ‘there is a compelling basis for the court to overturn Ms Maxwell’s conviction and grant her a new trial based on the disclosures of Juror #50 during deliberations.’
The longtime associate of Epstein was convicted on five of six counts around charges of sexual abuse and trafficking of young girls. Her guilty verdict just before the New Year concluded a monthlong trial featuring about 30 witnesses, sharing powerful accounts of the sexual exploitation of girls as young as 14.
A jury of six men and six women weighed evidence and testimony for five full days, totaling over 30 hours.
The trial, which began November 29, showcased disturbing testimony from four sexual abuse victims and illuminated Epstein’s connections to high-profile men, such as former Presidents Donald Trump and Bill Clinton, and Prince Andrew.
Four sexual abuse victims testified in the trial, which began November 29. Their stories detailed horrifying encounters, and illuminated Epstein’s connections to high-profile men, such as former Presidents Donald Trump and Bill Clinton, and Prince Andrew, who will soon face trial for sexual abuse allegations.
Maxwell could be sentenced to up to 70 years in prison. She also faces two perjury counts for allegedly lying under oath during civil litigation that involved sexual misconduct claims against her.
Judge Nathan previously ruled that she would be tried separately for these counts.
Epstein, her once boyfriend and longtime business associate, died by suicide in a Manhattan jail cell while awaiting his own sex abuse trial in 2019.
