A mother drove her toddler son to a beauty spot near their home – then pulled out a rifle and shot the two year-old dead, police say. Valerie Peck, 40, allegedly murdered her son Zack at Fantasy Canyon in Utah, on Monday.
Peck is said to have drive Zack to the stunning beauty spot, famed for its jagged rock formations, and spent some time at a camping site with her son. She is then accused of putting Zack into the back seat of their car and pulling out a .22-caliber rifle before shooting him dead.
Peck is then said to have shot herself, although she survived her injuries. The alleged killer mom drove around the area, which is close to where she lives, for several hours afterwards, Uintah County Sheriff’s Office said.
Sheriff’s deputies later apprehended Peck, and took her to hospital. They described her allegedly self-inflicted injuries as ‘serious,’ although Peck has since been discharged and charged with Zack’s murder, Deseret News reported.

No motive for the killing has been given, and it is unclear whether Peck intended to kill herself. Investigators have also not disclosed whether it was the mother herself who called in her son’s shooting.
A Facebook page that appears to belong to Peck shows her posing with husband David. The couple have one older child, with Valerie Peck sharing a petition calling for increased availability of IVF on her page.
A sheriff’s office spokesman said: ‘The sheriff’s office extends its most sincere condolences to all who knew and loved Zack.’
Peck is being held in jail ahead of her next court appearance.
