A party host was murdered by one of his guests after he told the visitor off for digging his bare hands into leftovers, a court heard. Vincell Jackson, 52, was stabbed nine times at his girlfriend’s home in Chicago in the early hours of Friday. Prosecutors say Jackson was killed by his guest James Dixon, 29.
Jackson is said to have forcefully escorted Dixon to the front door of his home after the leftovers incident at his girlfriend’s boozy Thanksgiving gathering. Dixon responded by sucker-punching the older man, a bail hearing was told on Monday, with their fight then said to have moved on to the porch of the home.
Numerous witnesses to the fight say they did not witness the fatal stabbing, but saw Jackson begging someone to call 911 while trying to restrain Dixon. Moments later, another witness reportedly saw Dixon running away as Jackson knelt dying over a banister, having suffered stab wounds to his head, face and left arm.
Jackson was rushed to hospital where he later died. Dixon was arrested eight hours later and had multiple knives on him – including one that was covered in blood, the Chicago Tribune reported. He suffered a single minor cut to his hand.
Dixon has since been charged with Jackson’s first-degree murder. Prosecutor Susie Bucaro told Monday’s hearing that multiple witnesses had described Dixon as the aggressor.
The alleged killer’s lawyer Patrick Ryan insisted that Dixon had a valid self-defense argument, and that he acted to protect himself. Dixon, who has prior convictions including felony arson, was ordered held in lieu of $350,000 bail.
He is due back in court later this week, and faces up to 60 years in jail if convicted of Jackson’s murder.
