American citizens have been warned against travelling to the UK over surging Covid cases.
The US placed the UK on its highest travel warning level on Monday when almost all legal Covid restrictions were lifted in England for ‘Freedom Day’.
The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has categorised the country under ‘Level 4: Very High’, warning that even fully-vaccinated travellers may be at risk.
Its first banding advises travellers to ‘exercise normal precautions’, the second raises the warning to ‘exercise increased caution’, and the third tells Americans to ‘reconsider travel’.
Before Monday, the UK had been at Level 3 since May, advising passengers to be double-jabbed before travel, while the unvaccinated should avoid non-essential trips.
Americans have now been told to ‘avoid travel to the United Kingdom’ alltogether – but advised to make sure they are double-vacciniated if their trip is essential.
The guidance added: ‘Because of the current situation in the United Kingdom, even fully vaccinated travellers may be at risk for getting and spreading Covid-19 variants.’

Brazil, South Africa and the Netherlands are among the countries already placed under the US’s highest category.
The move will come as a blow to Prime Minister Boris Johnson who had been attempting to negotiate a UK-US travel corridor with President Joe Biden.
