US officials have learned Friday that Russia has prepositioned a group of operatives to conduct a false-flag operation in eastern Ukraine in an attempt to justify an invasion into the country.
There’s evidence that the operatives are trained in urban warfare and in using explosives to carry out acts of sabotage against Russia’s own proxy forces, the US official told CNN.
The Biden administration believes Russia could be preparing for an invasion into Ukraine ‘that may result in widespread human rights violations and war crimes should diplomacy fail to meet their objectives,’ the official said.
The claim comes after a week’s worth of diplomatic meetings between Russian and Western officials over the tens of thousands of troops Russia has placed along Ukraine’s border.
During those meetings, Russian diplomats insisted that they had no plans to invade. They also repeatedly warned that a dangerous situation would develop if the US and NATO refused to accept their security demands.
US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan hinted at the intelligence during a Thursday briefing with reporters, saying that Russia ‘is laying the groundwork to have the option of fabricating the pretext for an invasion.’
‘We saw this playbook in 2014. They are preparing this playbook again and we will have, the administration will have, further details on what we see as this potential laying of the pretext to share with the press over the course of the next 24 hours,’ Sullivan said.
The Russian military plans these operations several weeks before a military invasion, the official said, meaning that an invasion could begin between mid-January into February.
