Sony has hit the nuclear button when it comes to Cyberpunk 2077, pulling the game from the PlayStation Store as if it was never released.
The madness of the Cyberpunk 2077 launch has reached unprecedented levels as Sony goes to the unheard of length of removing the game from the PlayStation Store entirely and offering refunds for anyone that’s bought the game from them digitally.
This is something they never usually do for indie games let alone what was to have been one of the biggest video game releases of the year.
The move is especially eyebrow raising because Sony are infamous for having a less generous refund policy than Microsoft and yet they’re now openly offering them for anyone that’s bought the game via the PlayStation Store.
‘SIE [Sony Interactive Entertainment] strives to ensure a high level of customer satisfaction, therefore we will begin to offer a full refund for all gamers who have purchased Cyberpunk 2077 via PlayStation Store. SIE will also be removing Cyberpunk 2077 from PlayStation Store until further notice’, reads a short message on the PlayStation website.
‘Once we have confirmed that you purchased Cyberpunk 2077 via PlayStation Store, we will begin processing your refund. Please note that completion of the refund may vary based on your payment method and financial institution.’
It’s already been calculated that CD Projekt’s founders have lost $1 billion from the launch debacle, as the company’s share price tumbles, but this is going to make things even worse.
Offering a refund for the season’s biggest game really is unprecedented, especially for Sony, and seems to show they have little faith in CD Projekt fixing the game anytime soon – especially as the next big patch isn’t due till January.
Sony may have taken umbrage at CD Projekt’s early offer of a refund to all customers, which implied they had already set up a system with Sony and Microsoft to process them, when in fact they had not and people were forced to go through the normal refund procedure used for any game.
How do I get a refund for Cyberpunk 2077 in the UK?
If you’ve bought a copy of Cyberpunk 2077 digitally from the PlayStation Store then you should go to this website and click the link at the bottom.
The page is getting used so much at the moment that it often comes up with an error, but at the moment all you can do is wait and try again later.
There’s no indication from Sony that there’s a time limit for when you have to apply for the refund, so as long as it’s in the next few days you should be fine.
