Cyberpunk 2077 player discovers one weird trick to improve PS4 version

Though it’s hardly a long-term solution, one Cyberpunk 2077 player has found a way to cope with the game’s performance on consoles.

While it has been an undeniable financial success, Cyberpunk 2077’s launch has been mired by all manner of issues, it’s most notorious being its performance on consoles, more specifically the base PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Between broken graphics, inconsistent frame rates, and other technical issues, CD Projekt has had to apologise for releasing the game in such a state and is even offering refunds.

Disgruntled PlayStation 4 and Xbox One owners are likely already taking advantage of the offer, but one player has discovered a trick that may be useful for anyone willing to stick with the game for the time being.

Initially outlined on the Cyberpunk 2077 Reddit page, Redditor joshmaaaaaaans realised that they could improve the console version’s frame rate by shooting in the air while in a crowded location.

When this happens, nearby characters obviously scatter in fear and panic, but if the player looks away from them and immediately looks back, those characters are gone entirely.

And with less characters on-screen at once, the frame rate becomes noticeably smoother. At the very least, it’s much closer to the expected 30 frames per second.

While helpful, it’s hardly a permanent solution to the problem and doesn’t fix the myriad of other issues plaguing the game.

CD Projekt has assured fans that it will release patches over the coming months to rectify these issues, though whether these will be enough to win back players is another question entirely.

The studio also still intends on releasing the game for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Hopefully, those versions will be relatively bug free and run smoothly, since the consoles run on stronger hardware.

Cyberpunk 2077 is available on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Stadia. PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions are planned for 2021.
