Nintendo Switch – will it get an upgrade next year? (pic: Nintendo)
The Tuesday Inbox asks whether anyone has ever bought a microconsole like Ouya, as one reader recommends Immortals Fenix Rising.

So obviously we can’t believe a word any Nintendo exec says, but what does everyone really think is the chance of a Switch Pro coming out next year? And if it’s not coming out next year what is the Nintendo game plan now? I know coronavirus was a big problem for them but there’s got to be something coming out soon, right? Not only was Hyrule Warriors not a major deal but they didn’t even make it, it was Koei Tecmo.
They recently said the Switch is halfway through its life but even assuming that’s true (and, like I said, I wouldn’t assume anything) you’d still expect for a new console to be announced a good year or two before it comes out. So are they going to try and get by without a Switch Pro and just go straight for a Switch 2? It’s a possibility but it’s not what they usually do, especially with their portables.
My theory is that, coronavirus willing, they will release a Switch Pro next Christmas, with an announcement in the summer. I just don’t see how they can go another three years with the basic Switch model when we have the new PlayStation and Xbox out in the wild, especially when the Xbox Series S is cheaper than a Switch.
Maybe I’m wrong but at this point educated guesses is the best anyone can do.
Game of the season
So after around nine months of playing pretty much nothing but Animal Crossing, the year’s finally seeming to see some new releases. Since November I’ve bought Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Cyberpunk 2077, and on Sunday I received Immortals Fenix Rising, which I am loving. Valhalla’s getting samey after 100+ hours, Cyberpunk 2077 has my pet hate… the micromanagement of weapons and armour every 10 minutes, but Immortals, I think this is gonna be the game for me this Christmas.
I’ll finish the other two at some point, but Immortals is the one holding my interest right now, a cross between Zelda: Breath Of The Wild and the Ubisoft formula, with added humour and lots and lots of colour; it’s proving hard to put down. I also have Control and Dragon Quest 11 to start on Game Pass… Phew, what an end to the year!
big boy bent
Award-winning video game
Is it an exaggeration to suggest that Cyberpunk 2077 is the biggest gaming disaster since E.T.? The entire gaming industry was almost destroyed by that one game; maybe only the publisher will be destroyed by this latest debacle.
Perhaps the next story will be the discovery of a bug that corrupts your whole hard drive (or SSD)…

Now playing – Ring Fit Adventure and Dragon Quest 11
GC: It’s certainly a contender.

Let it all hang out
So I see they’ve released a patch for Cyberpunk 2077 which resolves the glitch whereby the main protagonist’s willy would be left hanging out at all times. I think that’s actually a shame as it would have been worth playing in all its ‘glory’ just for this.
I am waiting for the proper next gen version for my Xbox Series X but I’d love for them to patch that back in as a possible cheat option or something, maybe like big head mode in GoldenEye 007. If there would be one memory of 2020 and its letdowns, apart from COVID, let it be the hanging tallywhacker in Night City. Perhaps they can give V’s disco stick a special ability in order to help tackle the hoodlums…
Thanks for all the great articles as always GC and wishing you and all the readership a happy Christmas and New Year.
So it’s the 35th anniversary of Zelda next year, are we expecting Nintendo to acknowledge it or are they going to admit that the whole 35 celebration for Super Mario Bros. was completely random and just the only thing they had time to do this year?
I would’ve thought they’d do something for Zelda but the anniversary is February 21 so that does not give a lot of time to announce anything. The best they could do is a Nintendo Direct really early in January and then maybe some kind of remaster or collection? Super Mario 3D World is out a week earlier though and I don’t think Nintendo would want to double up like that.
Which makes me think they won’t do anything, meaning the next big anniversary won’t be till 2026, which seems like half a lifetime away. Maybe by that time we’ll even get some news on Breath Of The Wild 2.
I couldn’t really think of any games to suggest for the weekend Hot Topic because I am very cautious about what I buy and while I’ve had disappointments I wouldn’t say there’s been any real disasters or anything. I was interested to see whether anyone would mention the Ouya though, but no-one did. I’ve always been fascinated by that console just because it seemed such an obvious scam and yet it got millions on Kickstarter and then only sold 200,000 consoles and the company went bust shortly after.
I still can’t understand what anyone saw in the idea of a ‘microconsole’ that only plays indie games, especially as it was basically just a smartphone in a box. Sure, it was easily moddable and all but so is a PC which is a million times more practical if that’s what you’re interested in.
There were a bunch of these microconsoles at the time (early 2010s) and none of them went anywhere, but I’ve never met or heard from a single person that ever bought one. Is there anyone that will admit to it amongst fellow Inboxers?
That Dreamcast Simpsons demo was really impressive. Not sure about the bug in it but it really looked fantastic. What a great console the Dreamcast was. Metropolis Street Racer, drool.
Wishing everyone a Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year. As much as it can be. What a nightmare of a year.
A difficult year
In regards to the weekend’s Hot Topic. I could not think if there was any regrettable game I ever bought in my life, apart from Alundra 2! But that has already been discussed in a former Hot Topic. But if I had bought Cyberpunk 2077 for the PlayStation 4 on release then by god that would definitely had been the biggest costly gaming mistake ever.
The ironic thing is, the game itself is perfectly fine in regards to the content, main story, and side quests, after watching Twitch streaming and reading good critical reviewing. As long as you have a decent PC of course. But even the new PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X can put up a good fight also, in regards to playing the game reasonably. But there are still just too many bugs to warrant a purchase currently.
Even Fallout 3 and New Vegas were better on their release on the current consoles at the time. I could put up with them at least. But over a decade later or more I would expect something better. So for now I can perfectly wait for the game of the year edition, a couple of years from now, and enjoy it like I did the The Witcher 3.
Overall, I have enjoyed the games I played this year, and got through the various lockdowns and the current lockdown also. Working full time from home now, for nearly three months, I now know what streamers and content creators feel like. Just get out of bed and walk downstairs to the home office. Playing games in between, and getting exercise by regular walking and doing shopping, by walking to and fro.
I even got the platinum Trophy in Subnautica, which I did not plan to get until I had time enough to do it. And also it was my personal game of 2020. Getting away from the real-world virus pandemic by saving an ocean world from a virus pandemic. One up to me, against the enemy in a gorgeous virtual world, full of amazing ocean exploration possibilities.
So this just really leaves me to wish everyone at GameCentral Towers, and the GC viewers, a very good Christmas and hopefully one to temporarily take your mind off the uncertainty, of this ever threatening pandemic. Will see you all in the New Year, and fingers crossed, wishing everyone a much healthier 2021. Stay safe and well.
Merry Christmas to all at GC and to every reader. A special thank you to reader Andrew J. He must be the most frequent contributor to the Inbox, with his informative posts of deals and freebies; it’s greatly appreciated. So merry Christmas to you, Andrew.
