Whatever this is, it looks very Team Ico (pic: GenDesign)
The developer behind Shadow Of The Colossus and The Last Guardian has offered a first glimpse at his new project for Epic Games.
There are a lot of uncertainties about what games will and won’t be released this year, as we made clear in our preview of 2021, but one we didn’t even dare to hope for is the new title from Ico creator Fumito Ueda.
Officially it is scheduled for this year, although given how often Ueda’s previous titles have been delayed we wouldn’t bank on that – especially as the game has still not been formally announced.
The image appears as part of a new year’s montage on the website of Ueda’s studio GenDesign. There’s no name associated with the artwork but the three preceding games are clearly Ico, Shadow Of The Colossus, and The Last Guardian.
The artwork looks similar in style to Udea’s previous games, which might suggest it plays similarly too, but there’s really nothing that can be discerned for certain at this stage.
Previous to this, the only image thought to be related to the game is the one below that appeared as part of a similar new year message in 2018. In that instance though it was less clear that it was for a new game and it’s since been theorised it’s just a prototype or abandoned concept.
Whatever the new game is, Ueda has suggested that it’s on at least the same scale as The Last Guardian.
‘If larger scale development becomes of interest to us then I think we will significantly expand our development system and take it to a large-scale development team to make it a big game’, he told Famitsu, as translated by Gematsu.
Although it may look like the earlier games the new title has no official connection to them, as the publisher is Fortnite creators Epic Games – not Sony.
Udea left Sony in 2011 (an unusual occurrence at the time but something that is becoming increasingly commonplace when it comes to Sony’s Japanese developers) and he ended up completing The Last Guardian as a freelancer.
The deal with Epic Games is part of a three-part project by the publisher that will see them working with other critically acclaimed developers including Remedy (Alan Wake and Control) and Playdead (Limbo and Inside).
Nothing has so far been seen concerning either of those two projects and it seems extremely unlikely that they will be released this year.
