For those who like a bit of adventure when they go away, The Clockwork Hotel in Burnham-on-Crouch might be just the place.

The Essex hotel has a unique way of checking in that involves guests taking an escape room challenge to unlock their keys.

Working as a team, they must solve problems across the floors of the private hotel – all while a countdown ticks away in the background.

After getting a welcome glass of bubbly, the hotel says you’ll ‘Unravel challenges, discover secrets, and take a peek around the rooms, working together as a crack team.’

They add: ‘We promise there’ll be plenty of giggles, groans, and heart-stopping moments as the clock counts you down.’

Thankfully you won’t be denied entry if you don’t manage to crack the code, and once the escape room is over you’ll be treated to three-course meal cooked by a private chef. Perfect for a debrief of your mystery-solving skills.

The Clockwork Hotel sleeps up to 22 people, and your stay includes a personal bartender and fully stocked cocktail bar.

The living room features a Smart TV and a crackling fireplace, plus there’s a spa area with bubbling hot tub and sauna for you and your companions to enjoy.

In the morning, you can head to a local cafe or prepare something yourselves with an add-on breakfast hamper in the kitchen.

You’re advised to take your heels off and wear comfortable clothing, as the ‘Crystal Maze style’ challenge element can get tiring and involve rushing around.

Prices start from £110 per person per night midweek and from £135 per person per night at weekends. Take a look at The Clockwork Inn here.
