Remote Irish island needs two new residents

After almost a year of many of us working from home, lots of people are reevaluating if they really need to be living in a city.

But while some might choose a smaller town or the suburbs, you could take it to the extreme and go completely off-grid, by moving to an uninhabited island off the Irish coast.

The good news is, you would get paid to live there, plus have free accommodation and food.

Great Blasket Island, off the coast of County Kerry, needs two new residents – preferably a pair of friends or a couple who can become caretakers together.

The caretakers will manage a cafe and holiday cottages during the spring and summer season from April until October.

You’ll live above the cafe, sharing a room between you.

The salary hasn’t been made available but will be discussed with the applicants during the selection process.

After receiving a huge number of applications last year, the couple who own the coffee shop and accommodation have put an cap on the number of applications this time around.

The position is open until January 22 but may close before then because of the number of applications.

While the job ad states that your days off will be weather dependent as it will be busy when the sailings to the island run but when you do get some free time, you can enjoy golden sandy beaches and green landscapes, as well as looking out for the colony of seals.

In terms of practicalities, your laundry will be collected and taken to the mainland, and you’ll get a food shop daily.
